Recurring pressure fluctuations apply repetitive cyclic loads on water supply network pipes. Network operators recognize these surges as the main source of mains breaks: increased stress on the walls of pipes leads to pipe material fatigue. Pipe stress has large cost implications to water utility operators – it not only causes micro-cracks that eventually become leaks, but also accelerates pipe degradation, significantly shortening a pipes effective life. Visenti provides PascalView and LeakIntel, products that automatically and effectively detect pressure surges/transients in water supply networks and monitor cyclic loading activity. Pressure data is provided by Visentis high rate (64Hz – 256Hz), low power, pressure transmitters installed at key network locations. PascalViews algorithms deliver data analytics on these pressure surges to identify the most stressed pipes in the network where there is high likelihood of pipe failure. The sources of these damaging transients are identified so the water utility can develop a plan to mitigate the damaging effect of transients, minimize burst rate and maximize effective pipe lifetime.
